Belt Sander

Difficulty level =

This project caused me a bit of anger; This was a vintage Craftsman belt sander I purchased used at a garage sale. The previous owner had mounted it on a cabinet and powered it with what appeared to be a washing machine motor and belt inside the cabinet.

I had loaned the tool to my then son-in-law who apparently did not value it to the extent I did. I found it outside in the rain at my daughter's home. The rain had rusted the metal components and caused the particleboard cabinet to delaminate.

I found a used TV stand at a used furniture store then disassembled all the metal parts, removed the rust with Naval Jelly, then repainted and reassembled the parts.

The motor provides powerfully strong torque handling the heaviest sanding projects far better than the cheap sander I purchsed new from Home Depot. The sander now resides in my 'new' son-in-law's shop.
