Restoration and Refinishing

Difficulty level =

Some lovely Mid-Century Modern furniture inherited from my wife's parents. Some items required more repair and refinishing than others.

Walnut Dining Table Refinished table
Refinished Table Description

Walnut dining room table with a unique extension ccpability. Not much refinished was required as the previous owner had protected the table top with a padded cover for most of it's use.

Badly damaged sewing machine cabinet Refinished sewing machine cabinet

The sewing machine cabinet was badly damaged to the extent where I strongly considered trashing it. However I disassembled it completely, cleaning the hardware and ordering new sheets of walnut vaneer to replace the badly delaminated panels.

My wife's old singer sewing machine fit perfectly and completed the restoration.

Walnut Coffee Table Restored Coffee Table

This walnut coffee table was in seriously bad shape. It had been stored in a garage attic, badly warped from heat and moisture. This required a lot of clamping and gluing to get the slats as closely to straight as possible. The finish was badly deteriorated but the restored walnut grain now shows though beautifully.

Mid-Century Modern Sofa Description

This Teak Mid-Century sofa had been in daily use for decades. One arm had been worn down to the wood by the owner resting his hot tea cup on it. The cushions were filthy and the foam padding inside was deteiorating and crumbling.

Thankfully an Internet search revealed a company that would make custom cushions by order. After reviewing samples sent in the mail, a pattern fitting furniture of the time period was selected. The wood was refinished and restained while awaiting delivery of the new cushions.

Zenith AM Radio Restored Radio

This old Zenith radio was not working, however using a primitave vacuum tube tester I was able to find (again on the Internet) a replacement tube. I replaced the old waxy paper capacitors soldering in place new ones. It takes a few minutes for it to 'warm up' but comes in loud and clear. I found a plastic refurbishing polish which brought back the shine of the original plastic case

The radio interestings does not have an FM band. After researching online I found that the CEO of Zenith was dismissive of FM radio and believed his company could discourage the FM listening public if the radios Zenith sold did not have an FM band. History proves that was a significant mistake in marketing judgment.
