Gas Fireplace

Difficulty level =

This project involved taking a bare and not-so-useful corner of the room and turning it into a corner hearth. This project was a bit more complex. I enlisted my friend Rocky to help me with the framing and installation. A city permit was required to run the gas line to the fireplace.

BEFORE: AFTER:
Rough framing for the corner hearth. Fireplace installed, gas line connected.
Cutting hole for exterior vent. Complications:

As luck [or lack of] would have it, the location of the vent was EXACTLY where the fence post was located. The fence had to be partially disassembled, post sawn off at ground level, and a new fence post placed an additional foot away from the fireplace vent.

The ducting for the fireplace is a double "duct within a duct" - one to take in fresh air for combustion and an outer to vent combustion gases.

Some electrical re-routing was required as an inside outlet would have been "walled-in" by the hearth framing. The outlet box was reinstalled as an exterior outlet.

The finished fireplace ads enormous design and warmth to the living room. The mantle was constructed of solid Cherry and fireplace surrounded with Travertine marble.

The mantle is illuminated from a brass recessed "eye" fixture in the ceiling above the fireplace.

The brass wall switch turns on the fireplace. A thermostatically controlled fan kicks in to circulate warm air when the fireplace is sufficiently warm.
