2006 - Family Events in Review

January 2006-
January in Oregon is generally COLD with gray skies!! But each year we like to break up the darkness of winter & warm ourselves
in sunny environs. Our plans to travel to Cancun, Mexico with our travel buddies, William & Kathryn, were diverted by Hurricane
Wilma, so instead we traveled to our “home” resort at Fiesta Americana Vacation Club on the Southern tip of Baja, Mexico.
Our friends, Bob and Lenka, were able to accompany us. We've found that it is always more fun to invite guests to come along…
its like taking the party with you! We all had lots of fun and relaxation on the warm Mexican beaches.
This was our second trip to Los Cabos .
We woke up each morning to beautiful sunrises over the Sea of Cortez and had some
wonderful meals in downtown Cabo San Lucas. (Photo album)
It's a great place to relax by the pool or take a Margarita Cruise
out to “the "Arch” (El Archo) and watch the whales. Scheduled for January 2007 – The Big Island of Hawaii!

February 2006-
On February 9th at 8:46 pm, our second grandchild, William Reed Ghozeil, was born to Amy and Adam. He weighed 7 lbs. 11 oz.
and was 20 inches long at birth. Grandma Liz came out from Virginia to witness his birth. William was born within a half-hour
of the parents' arrival to the hospital. Everything happened so fast that Liz is not sure she got her money's worth!
|
At first, Lydia
had a hard time with sharing Grandma Nancy with her baby brother, but now understands that her grandparents have enough
love to share with all their grandkids.

August 2006-
On August 1st, Nancy finally retired from the State of Oregon after 22 years in social services. Bob had already retired exactly
one year previously. We celebrated our mutual retirements with a theme party based on the 1968 television series, “The Prisoner.”
The props for the party were years in the making and included working P.A. system and signposts, which transformed our backyard
into “The Village.” We hosted two parties, one for family & friends and another for former co-workers. Attendees got into the spirit
of the event and dressed up for the occasion with striped shirts, hats, capes or “sixties” garb. As "No. 6" would say, "My life is my own".
The link to the Prisoner Party site, including a photo album, can be accessed here.

September 2006-
On September 26th at 8:06 am, our third grandchild, a boy, was born to Laura and Tyson Smith. Beckett Emerson Smith
weighed 7 lbs. 3 oz. and was 21 inches long at birth.
|
Beckett was visited at the hospital in Portland by his 3 sets of grandparents
on the day of his birth, not to mention his Aunt Kara and his Uncle Ian, who had also been anxiously awaiting his arrival.

October 2006-
We traveled to northern Virginia and Washington DC, guests of Ike Ghozeil and Liz Maggio. It was quite like staying at a Bed &
Breakfast & Dinner! Neither of us had ever been to the D.C. area, so each day brought new sights. We visited several historic
locations in Virginia, including Mount Vernon with its newly opened orientation center complete with educational theatres and
museum galleries. The old mansion and many of the outbuildings have been nicely restored.
|
The highlight of our day with Ike in
DC was taking the garden tour of the south lawns of the White House, an event that takes place only twice a year in October and
in April; it is not publicized for obvious reasons. We happened upon it on our way to visit the Old Post Office.
We've had a great year and hope you've had the same. Let us hear from you. Now that we're both retired, we might even have time to respond!
~ Happy Holidays, Bob & Nancy
